Living in the war is hard but surviving after the war is harder, the film reflects life of Savannah a man who lost most of his family to the horrors of the Khmer Rouge regime is a former solider in the Cambodian Civil War but has to struggle in returning to normal life. He falls in love with a 19-year-old bar girl, Srey Poeuv who is humiliated by her debts to the bar's owner, and is forced to keep working. Savannah wants to help Srey clear her debt, so he teams up with an ex-soldier and plans a crime that could net him some money.

In 2000, President Joseph Estrada declared an all-out-war against the Mindanao's secessionist group Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) with an aim at finishing the war in few weeks but it was unfinished. Its effects indiscriminately harm several innocent lives in the area either Muslims or Christians. The film makes audience realize about the meaning of living in the difference and tolerance.

The movie explores life of Timor Leste's national hero Xaxana Gusmao through his journey of struggle for independence. Becoming an independence country is hard but to keep country's spirit of freedom alive is harder. Gusmao reveals his philosophy of being a fighter that not only fighting in the battlefield but also fighting to keep forgiveness and reconciliation in mind.
